School was fortunate today to be visited by the Pet Awareness Scheme (PAWS) of East Riding Council. Lead Officer from the Animal and Pest Control Service visited every class and gave them a talk on how to be responsible pet owners.

This is all part of our ‘Responsible Dog Ownership’ project, aiming to increase awareness about the amount of dog mess on the streets of Wilberfoss.

Installed last week, we’re incredibly grateful to the Friends Of Wilberfoss School for contributing to the cost of the projector, screen, and audio visual equipment for the hall.

And it’s always good to see the new equipment being put to good use…. here’s Mr Nevill’s Remembrance Assembly, with full audio and visual backing.

FOWS have also contributed to another piece of audio-visual hardware; our new portable PA system. This will no doubt prove invaluable for sports days and outdoor activites in the future.

Every year we take part in the Macmillan Cancer Support coffee mornings, and this year was no exception, with staff and parents enjoying a cuppa in the school hall this morning.

But this year we thought it would be nice to add something to it. And what goes better with coffee than cake?

So the school staff made the cakes, the pupils sold the cakes, and you bought them.

Thank you so much – we raised £155 in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Our Simply Books Book Fair will be arriving on Monday 15th October!

Simply Books (at Burnby Gardens) will be providing books for our Book Fair again this year.

Many of the books will be discounted, and will be on sale until 4pm after school each day that week. School will receive a commission from the book sales, which we will use to order books through Simply Books, so any sales will be benefiting a local business as well as the school.

We hope you will be able to come and have a browse!

And please remember that Simply Books (at Burnby Gardens) will be open throughout the year for your literature needs. Have a look at their website for details and support your local book shop!

Mini-Book Cover Competition

To get us all in the mood (and give the children a chance to win some Book Fair vouchers) we are having a little competition. The challenge this year is to design a mini book cover, using the template found here on the school website. It can be for a completely made-up book or one of your favourites, but we would like to see original work, not just a direct copy! Feel free to use whatever materials you like – paints, felt tips, collage, etc. Older children can gain extra points by writing a blurb on the back, but, as before, we want to see your own words, not just a copy off a real book.

Entries need to be handed in by Monday 8th October for judging. We hope the children enjoy thinking about books, and we really look forward to seeing the results!

(Alternatively, you could open this picture of the template in a new tab and print it out – half A4 will be the right size)

We’ll see you at the book fair!

Today the entire school had the chance to be inspired by Dr. Jo Willoughby, a member of the Team GB Skiing Squad, and winner of over 30 medals and titles to date.

Through her assembly the school sat rapt and attentive, as she told us of her life as a skiier, her training, her motivation, her competitions, her time with Team GB, and much, much more.

Thank you so much to Dr. Willoughby for visiting us, we’ll definitely be keeping in touch!

Jo is an inspiration, but to keep inspiring she’s always keen to talk to more people prepared to provide sponsorship. If you think this could be you, get in touch via her website – www.jowilloughby.co.uk

Here are a few pictures of today’s visit, head to the school website for more.

Every 20 minutes in the UK, a child is hurt or killed on foot, most on the way to or from school.
Nearly half of our children are now driven to school meaning more obesity and traffic danger.” (From the Brake website)

Wednesday saw the now annual Walking Bus event snaking its way around the village. Its aim is to promote walking to and from school and encourage drivers to reduce their speeds in areas such as our village. Amazingly we had sun for the third year running!
