“Every 20 minutes in the UK, a child is hurt or killed on foot, most on the way to or from school.
Nearly half of our children are now driven to school meaning more obesity and traffic danger.” (From the Brake website)

Wilberfoss took part in the walking bus event last year, and we were really happpy to do it again this year.

The idea behind the walking bus is to highlight how wonderful it would be to see more children regularly walking to school and how it’s vital for drivers to reduce their speeds in areas such as our village.

Walking to school is wonderful, taking traffic off the roads, easing congestion, reducing pollution and most importantly getting children used to walking and having independence.

Here are just a few of the pictures … many more at the school website – it’s on the School Events page.

How wonderful – as part of their topic on the Rain Forest, Mrs McFetridge and Mr Crawford arranged a great treat for their classes – a visit from some animals. Granted, not necessarily Rain Forest animals – but the children didn’t seem to mind and we took what we could get!

The animals were provided by Morley Exotic Animal Rescue -

An RSPCA approved trust that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes all exotics, regardless of type – but where re-homing is impossible the animals are used to visit schools and educate local children in good husbandry.

The presentation they gave to the class was one of the most interesting and fun we’ve seen.

They brought in….

Harley – the Barn Owl:

Tiny – a really, really large Python – but he’s just a baby – the really big ones are much, much larger!

But the absolute star of the show, the animal EVERYONE loved, the animal that was such a hit we actually arranged for him to have a quick walk around the school just to allow more of the pupils to go aaaawwwww over him.
