Comic Adventures Of Boots
By Satoshi Kitamura
(Here’s the blurb……)
“Three hilarious stories are told in graphic style in this book destined for multiple readings. The first episode finds the charismatic Boots without a place to nap on his usual wall. A bit of ingenuity and some fish biscuits are all he needs to get some room, though his scheme is certain to backfire. The second chapter has Boots enlisting the duck Madam Quark for swimming and flying lessons, with dubious results. And the pièce de résistance comes last in probably the most hilarious game of charades ever played by cats.
The entire book gleams with wit and sublime absurdity and is sure to be a family favorite.”
Here’s a great review by Hannah (Year 3)
This graphic novel – Comic Adventures of Boots is really, really funny. It’s all about a silly cat called Boots and there are three stories in the book.

First there’s a story called “Operation Fish-Biscuit“.
Boots goes outside to sleep on his favourite bit of wall, but 100 cats are already on the wall before him! He has an idea - operation fish-biscuit, where he puts fish biscuits on the top of the garage roof to make the cats move! Leanardo the cat has an idea to make a cat pyramid all the way up the garage roof. But Leonardo goes up first and he eats all the biscuits!!!!

The second story is called “Pleased to meet you Madam Quark“. Boots is walking outside and meets a swan called Madam Quark who teaches him how to swim. Before Madam Quark even steps a tiny bit away Boots asks another question – can she teach him how to fly? It’s very funny when he tries and falls into a bush – Madam Quark cant find him at first but she finds him in the bush upside down.

The third story is called “Lets play a guessing game“. The cats are all bored – too bored even to sleep but Leonardo has an idea to play a guessing game. The cats pretend to be something – Leonardo gave an example the answer was a dog.
All the cats have a go, with some very silly guesses – squirrel, chameleon, pencil sharpener, penguin! Two cats even did a double act, with one cat singing and the other cat being a guitar! And when it’s Boot’s turn he takes the cats to the bathroom and jumps into the full bath! All of the cats guess that he’s a submarine but Boots doesn’t come up for air! When they finally pull him out - he’s got twirly eyes and squirts water! Then they all guess that he’s a fountain!
The Adventures Of Boots is funny, silly and cute, and just the sort of thing I love!

Born To Run
By Michael Morpurgo
Review by Katie (Year 3)
Born to Run is the most extraordinary book I have ever read. It is about running (and I hate running) but that doesn’t mean I hate this book.
Patrick finds a sack of puppies in the canal, and rescues them by diving in! His dad says he can’t keep them and they get sent to the RSPCA home.
When Patrick gets home he throws himself on the bed and dreams of the puppy he liked best…. and he wakes up to find the puppy licking his face!
His parents explain that they where going to move to a bigger house and that they had agreed he could keep him so long Patrick looked after him.

He calls the puppy “Best Mate”.
My favourite chapter was “Be fast Bright Eyes, be fast”. This particular chapter is my favourite because it is also the most worrying. In this chapter Best Mate gets kidnapped by a very cruel breeder who races greyhounds.
The breeder has a step-daughter called Becky who adores all the dogs. She names him “Bright Eyes”. Becky loves Bright Eyes as her own dog.
Then Becky finds out what happens to all the dogs whose time racing is over. The thing that happens is too dreadful to bear with and she is afraid that it will someday happen to Bright Eyes. So, she runs away with Bright Eyes………
Read this extraordinary book to find out more!
All through the time Iwas reading this book, my heart was thumping fast.
The story is sad, happy and worrying all the way through.
When I was reading it late at night I always felt I was actually in the book, and it was happening right beside me.
I absolutely love this story I am writing about.

How wonderful – as part of their topic on the Rain Forest, Mrs McFetridge and Mr Crawford arranged a great treat for their classes – a visit from some animals. Granted, not necessarily Rain Forest animals – but the children didn’t seem to mind and we took what we could get!
The animals were provided by Morley Exotic Animal Rescue -
An RSPCA approved trust that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes all exotics, regardless of type – but where re-homing is impossible the animals are used to visit schools and educate local children in good husbandry.
The presentation they gave to the class was one of the most interesting and fun we’ve seen.
They brought in….
Harley – the Barn Owl:

Stinky Dee – a very lovely skunk

Godzilla – a very large Black Throated Monitor Lizard

A young bird eating spider

Tiny – a really, really large Python – but he’s just a baby – the really big ones are much, much larger!

But the absolute star of the show, the animal EVERYONE loved, the animal that was such a hit we actually arranged for him to have a quick walk around the school just to allow more of the pupils to go aaaawwwww over him.
Alfie, the young Meerkat:

Toon Books are a graphic novel series designed for the youngest of readers. We have a set of 4 in the school library and they’re borrowed and enjoyed by all years.
But when the latest Toon Books release; Patrick in A Teddy Bear’s Picnic came through I really wanted to get the views of some children in the right age group. So we’re very pleased to welcome the very latest, and very youngest reviewers – Katy (Age 8) and Lucy (Age 7).
I gave them Patrick, but also gave them a selection of other Toon Books, thinking it would be useful to get an idea of the series. I certainly didn’t expect them to come back with not just one review, but a spectacular four!
Ladies and gentlemen… Katy & Lucy:

Patrick in A Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Other Stories
By Geoffrey Hayes
Katy says:
In this book there are four stories. My favourite story is the one where Patrick goes to the shop for his mum to get cookies but Big Bear tries to steal his dollar and later his cookies.
The book, and the pictures, are very funny as well – and it was very funny when Patrick is naked after taking his wet clothes off! I really like the big picture on page 5, it’s a very nice start to the story.

Lucy says:
Patrick in A Teddy Bear’s Picnic has four stories in it. My favourite one was when Patrick went to the cookie store. In this story his mum asked him to go to the cookie store. On the way he bumps into Big Bear, who tries to steal his dollar, but Patrick escaped. On the way home Big Bear met Patrick again, but Patrick shouted ROAR! And Big Bear as scared.
Another funny story was Patrick being told to have a sleep by his mum but he didn’t snooze at all – but when he went outside to play he did snooze.

Luke On The Loose
By Harry Bliss
Lucy says:
In this story Luke chases flappy pigeons all around the town crazily shouting YAAAAH! Eventually he climbs up onto a roof and falls asleep and snores loudly until the firemen come to rescue him and return him to his parents. I think this story is funny because Luke and the pigeons cause so much trouble – the best bit was when Luke and the pigeons flipped an ice-cream from the ice-cream seller onto someone’s head!

Katy says:
This book is about a little boy who goes off chasing pigeons in the park. He ends up sleeping on the roof!
It was very funny when the cat thought “I’ll never let my kittens chase pigeons” – and then the cat does exactly that when she saw Luke and the Pigeons on the roof! The book is interesting when the fireman come. I Liked the book very much and the picture were very good.

Benny And Penny in The Toy Breaker
By Geoffrey Hayes
Lucy says:
This story was about 3 mice; Benny, Penny and Bo. Every time Bo comes round to play he breaks most of Benny and Penny’s toys. This time he breaks a bat and a ball and Penny’s favourite toy – her cuddly monkey! When he breaks the bat and ball, the ball goes into Benny’s eye!
In the end Bo made a get well letter to Penny’s monkey and they all played together without any toys. I think this book was very good because they weren’t very sensible and they weren’t too naughty.

Katy says:
Benny & Penny in The Toybreaker is about a brother and sister becoming friends with their cousin Bo. The brother is called Benny and the younger sister is called Penny. Bo is “The Toy Breaker” – who always breaks Benny and Penny’s toys when he comes round to play. But they all become friends when Bo gets stuck in a fence and Benny and Penny help him.
I liked the part when they finally become friends and it is a happy ending. But I also thought it was funny when Bo hits the ball into Benny’s eye! The pictures were funny and they helped to tell the story.

Zig And Wiki in Something Ate My Homework
By Nadja Spiegelman and Trade Loeffler
Katy says:
This book is about two friends called Zig and Wikki. They are two strange creatures; aliens from outerspace.
Zig’s teacher wants him to bring in a pet for homework. So Zig and Wikki land their spaceship on Earth and they try to find one there. This means they look at lots of different animals.
I liked it when they got a ride on a lily pad by a frog and it was funny when Zig zapped Wikki instead of the raccoon. The book told you about some animals and the facts were very interesting. The pictures were great and funny.

Lucy says:
In this story Zig and Wikki were aliens who were looking for a pet. But Wikki got them lost in space and they went to planet Earth.
When they got to Earth, there were lots of animals to choose from; a fly landed on Ziggy’s chocolate bar – Zig tried to catch it with a net but catches Wikki instead. He also tried to catch a dragonfly, a frog and a raccoon. They tried to shrink the raccoon but they shrunk Wikki!
Katy made a very good point at the end of all of her reviews – “The pictures are very good – in fact, I couldn’t read the story without them!” I think we can all agree that we’ve got two great new reviewers there! Thank you so much to Katy and Lucy for doing these for us, and we really can’t wait to see what you’ll review next!

Mr Bruton here – I just wanted to introduce you to three very, very clever children – Katy, Lewis and Ben. They’re only in Year 3 and thus become our youngest bloggers yet.
Year 3 & 4 recently finished a topic on The Vikings and I asked these three stars who had finished their ICT work to write a report on what they’d done. Their work is below, and I hope you’ll agree, it’s very, very good indeed.

Katy:
Year 3 were learning about Vikings. We learnt about how they invaded Lindisfarne and when they invaded England. We even painted pictures of Vikings!
In ICT we wrote about them and we found pictures of them. Sometimes we went on a website about Vikings and we found lots of infomation there.
In Literacy we wrote about what we had learnt on the website. In Music we learnt a song called Viking Rock. It was really hard to fit the words in, but we managed to get them in.
Also in art we made some Viking helmets. To make them first we covered some balloons in newspaper, then when we had stuck three layers on we covered it in scrap paper. After that we painted them grey and last of all we decorated them with gold and silver paint. Some people needed to put another layer on. In our spare time we read a story about Vikings and we still havent got to the end of it.

Lewis:
We were learning about the Vikings. We learnt how they invaded England.
We sung a song about them. It was called Viking Rock. We made helmets and on the 9th of November we decorted them.
Ben:
Fist we drew a picture of a Viking warrior or man. Then we painted him painted him. Next we cut it out.
After that we leant a song called Viking Rock. Then we performed it in front of our parents and the whole school. Then we got some balloons and covered them in newspaper 4 times and painted them grey than we did some patterns in gold and silver to make our helmets.
