Firework Music

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

The children in Key Stage 1 have been experimenting with different instruments. They have been thinking about the sounds that fireworks make and trying to create some of their own.

Here are a few videos of the children showing their work.

KS1 Wellbeing day

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

On Monday 8th May the children in Key Stage 1 took part in a ‘wellbeing’ day! All the children participated in different activities outdoors. The activities provided were all to make the children feel good about themselves.

The children took part in…

Forest, Areobics, Music making, Peer Massage, Smoothy making and a story telling session. All the activities were outside and some were even in special tents.

At the end of the day ALL the children left school with a huge smile and feeling good about themselves. The adults too had a big smile and felt very proud of the children at Ashbrow!

Here are a few photos of the day!

Super storytellers

Friday, April 8th, 2011

This week Sycamore class were visited by a storyteller who met us in the Forest Garden and told us a fantastic version of Red Riding Hood. It was different from the versions we had heard before so we decided to change the ending to one we liked better!

Susannah then started playing on her tin whistle and we followed her through the trees, looking for spring flowers and listening out for the crackle of leaves and branches under our feet. Eventually, she led us to a lovely sunny spot on the banking where she told us the story of young girl who meets a mysterious woman in white.

The story finished with everyone taking a ribbon and dancing through the lavender before being given a special gold coin – BUT everyone had to promise to tell the story to someone else before they ate it. Who did you tell?

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

Of course, in Sycamore class we are fantastic at creating our own stories and we have spent a beautiful sunny afternoon back in the Forest Garden putting the finishing touches to our own story plans. We can’t tell you what our stories are about just yet, but we have collected some brilliant ideas and hope to share them with you soon!

Getting inspired in the Forest Garden on a sunny afternoon

And they all lived happily ever after………….

Key Stage 1 have all been reading traditional tales over the last couple of weeks. The children have had many opportunities to dress up, use props and puppets outside with Mrs Moville and use Easi-speak microphones to record their different character voices. Ash class had a fabulous session using story telling chairs outside and identifying popular story language inside.

This week the children were set a number of problems, related to different and popular traditional tales, and they had to find their own solutions…………

Here are some of the activities they were asked to complete….

Some of the children spent a long time finding a solution to a particular job and most were determined to succeed!

The children were asked to build a house for the three pigs that was strong enough to stand up in a gentle breeze and a hurricane! (In order to make it a fair test we used a hair dryer and everyone tested their houses in different strength winds, using 2 different settings). It was great fun!

The quickest challenge was to see how long it took to climb to the top of the beanstalk (wall bars). Some of the children took more than 20 seconds but some were able to do it in under 6 seconds!

Climbing the beanstalk

One of the children’s very favourite jobs was using props and costumes in the role-play room with Mrs Moville and re-enacting some of the traditional tales they had read in class. They could choose who to be and what to use and some of them even made up their own story. The final part of this job was to write down any story language they had used.

Watch this slideshow and see if you can guess which traditional tales the children are re-enacting.

Can you think of any story language we might have used in these stories?

Click on the link below and watch this video of another group of children re-enacting a different traditional tale.

Traditional tales video

Have they used the correct story language for this traditional tale?

At the end of the day the children were asked to share anything they had learnt. Here are some of their thoughts….

“I didn’t know I could climb that high”

“I didn’t know you could use a hairdryer for wind”

“I haven’t made (acted out) my own story before”

“I thought the sticks would blow down in the wind but they didn’t”

“I didn’t know I could climb fast”.

Which problem would YOU have tried to solve and what do YOU think YOU might have learnt?

Swimming with the Smiley Room

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Aiden, Thomas, Callum and Alex really enjoyed swimming this week with Miss Warren and Mrs Vassallo.

Thomas is learning to swim on his back and no longer needs armbands!

Alex is getting better at swimming on his front and his legs are getting stronger.

Callum and Aiden love it when we get the balls and the floats out, and especially love splashing the grown ups! I think we need to start wearing swimming caps to keep our hair dry!!

And so we begin………

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Today has been a very special day in Key Stage 1 as the children at Ashbrow Infant and Nursery School have started on their blogging journey.

The children were asked to share with you something they have learnt recently or something that they like doing in school.

(It is all THEIR OWN WORK as we feel it is very important that our children have a voice and a place to share what is important to them.) They were  eager to have their posts published and to tell others they were famous.

We would love you to comment on any of the children’s work and their blog posts, especially at this very early stage. Also if you would like to ask the children any questions or make suggestions as to the type of work you would like to see on this blog, please do.

We look forward to hearing from you
