Hopefully not too late… There’s always next year.

Here is a nice page from the NORAD site (noted for the ‘Tracking Santa’ facility for Christmas Eve).

Float your mouse around the village and access suitably Christmassy activities.

Hopefully this might keep some over-excited children busy in the build up to the big day.

Listen to the ‘True Colours Choir’ in Walsall as they give you advice on how to stay safe on the internet in the form of a Christmas carol sung to the traditional tune of “The Holly and the Ivy”.

I think this is a great way for children to remember the eSafety rules. Now we just need to match the lyrics to a song we can use year round! I’ll get my thinking cap on, and if anyone else manages it let me know!

Virtual Worlds

Is there a place for virtual environments in education?

Google Lively is sadly soon to die but Second Life continues to burgeon. There is no doubt that these alternative worlds hold a fascination for young and old alike and Runescape (among others) has a huge attraction for young folk.

There are a few newer offerings on the web aimed at younger users that may be worth looking at.

Jumpstart is an American site. Perhaps more promising is the BBC’s Adventure Rock. You can read about it here, in an article outlining the virtues of virtual worlds. Also, for older kids, there’s Justleapin.

Fantastic Contraptions

Design Technology, Modelling, Resources, Simulations 3 Comments »

Fantastic Contraptions is an online simulation which could be used for Modelling, Design Technology or Problem Solving. You are given components such as wheels and connectors, which you have to build so that they will travel to a goal box. The first couple of levels are easy, but it soon gets much harder! There is also a Web 2.0 element where you can share your contraptions online and see what other people have created. Have a go at:
