Jelly Bean Maths and Science!

Posted by admin on Sunday May 6, 2012 Under Literacy

We have a Jelly Bean shop in the class room! We are using our Maths knowledge to help us with the shop! We have read a fabulous and fun book called ‘How many Jelly Beans!’ and loved the huge fold out poster at the back which had a million dots for Jelly beans on it! Now we know what an enormous number 1 million is!

We decided to do some science with the Jelly Beans and wanted to see what happened when we put them in different liquids. First we put them in distilled vinegar. We put 2 beans in the cup and stirred it for 5 minutes - some of the colour came off the beans and we saw that the red and yellow bean, changed the vinegar to an orange colour, while the blue and yellow went greenish. If you didn’t stir the vinegar then not much colour came out of the bean.

We had make a hypothesis before we started - and thought that the colour would change - we also thought that if we added bicarbonate of soda it would fizz up, and the fizz would be the same colour as the liquid. We knew it would probably fizz because we had done an experiment before about vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. It did fizz - but the bubbles only had a tint of the colour of the liquid. When we left the beans in the liquid over night, the hard coating disappeared and only the soft jelly was left. Most of the colour had dissolved into the liquid.

We loved doing the experiment, so we repeated the experiment using Sprite - this time the colour came out quicker and was stronger, but the bicarbonate of soda didn’t fizz up as much.

Your character descriptions were fantastic and everyone really tried their best, and remembered Mr Perfect’s tips for character writing - can you spot all the adjectives and similes we have used?

Then we took our writing to the computer suite and used Purple Mash to publish and illustrate our Gruffalo descriptions! Can you spot all the exciting vocabulary we have used?

She has knobbly knees, curly hair, pink prickles and turned out toes. She has a beauty spot on her beautiful face and she has hard teeth like a brick! She also has long arms, purple, long tail and peachy skin. Her face is yellow and hair is blue. Another amazing fact is she has claws as sharp as a knife! Her face is like the bright, yellow sun. Did you know she is the most beautiful creature in the wood?

The Gruffalo and his family!

Posted by admin on Saturday Apr 28, 2012 Under Literacy

What a brilliant week we have had! You have all worked so hard.. the team collages of trees for the wood, look brilliant. You worked really carefully making your clay models of the Gruffalo and then you really enjoyed painting them. We had all thought about what the Gruffalo Mum might look like, and when you painted your own clay models I know you enjoyed using your imagination to create some extraordinarily colourful members of the Gruffalo family!

Unfortunately the computers were playing up when you tried to blog your descriptions - but do try and finish them at home - you had such amazing ideas.

The Gruffalo Mum by Mayan

Posted by ma58528 on Saturday Apr 28, 2012 Under Literacy
Would you believe that the Gruffalo has a wife and the Gruffalo Child has a mum, but you won’t see her in the books written by Julia Donaldson! The Gruffalo mum has lips which looks like blood. Did you know that the Gruffalo mum’s horns are extraordinarily, hard, harder than a rock? Can you believe that her arms are longer than a snake! She has claws that are really sharp. You would be shocked that the Gruffalo mum is really strong, she can break a metal gate!!! Also the Gruffalo’s mums fur is golden and it feels really soft! She also had some multi coloured prickles and 1 small beauty spot on her face. Another amazing fact is that the Gruffalo mum has a bright, pink tongue that is extraordinarily smelly and smooth. Her favourite colour is hot pink. Can you imagine that the Gruffalo Mum is soo heavy that you can’t pick her up!! She also has some circle, gold earings.
I like the Gruffalo mum because she is fierce but, she looks soo beautiful that I can’t stop  looking at her! I like the Gruffalo mum better than the Gruffalo Child and the Gruffalo because she is stronger than the Gruffalo, she does lots of excersise and she always goes to the gym!!

My new Gruffalo book! by Mayan

Posted by ma58528 on Tuesday Apr 24, 2012 Under Literacy
Gruffalo took a stroll through the deep dark woods. They were not any ordinary woods, but they are the spookiest woods ever! First off all he met the scary bear! “Where you going?” asked the bear. “Come and play with me please”. Said the bear.
“Sorry i’m really busy at the moment!” Replied the Gruffalo.
“Okay bye”. Said the bear.
The Gruffalo kept on going till he saw the wise owl. “Can we play hide and seek?” Said the wise owl with excitement.
“I would love to but I can’t!” Replied the Gruffalo.
Soon the Gruffalo saw the black cat. The black cat said “Lets make funny faces because it will be very fun!”
Oh but……………………… I can’t”. Replied the Gruffalo sadly. And of he went. Later on the Gruffalo said “I must play with my friends because I’m getting bored!”
So the Gruffalo saw the black cat, they made funny faces and they laughed alot! “Thankyou very much said the black cat!”
“Your welcome”. Replied the kind Gruffalo.
Then he saw the wise owl, the Gruffalo said “we can play hide and seek!” Together they played, the more they had fun. “Thankyou”, said owl.  He walked untill he saw bear, they played all of bears favourite games. The Gruffalo apologised what he said to all of them. They said it’s all right.
The end!
