The first time we went swimming, we were all excited. We walked down to the sports centre in pairs. When we finally got there, we walked into our separate changing rooms to get ready. When we got ready we walked into the pool area and sat down to wait for the instructors. When they came in to do the register we were sat in anticipation and excitement. They called our names in alphabetical order and we all had to swim a width across the shallow end to see how well we did and then sort us into groups. It was the end of our lesson but they promised we’d be in the water nearly the whole lesson next time.

We walked again the next week. We were chatting and messing about this time. We were wondering what we were going to do as we approached the door into the baths. We got changed a lot quicker than last time and hurried to the pool side. As we waited once again, we looked at the water and yearning to jump in and spoil the smooth surface. The teachers came out again and told each of the groups to follow them. We did as we were told and lined up on the edge of the pool. The bottom group each got in and swum some widths in different styles. The middle group did the same except they did lengths and, in addition to this, the top group did half lengths in different styles including the butter fly. It was very good and tiring. We hoped they’d all be like this…

They all went like this except we did different styles and moved to different parts of the pool with floats. But the last lesson was different. We had a course and test for the skill of life survival. Firstly we all had to get into the pool and keep are head from getting wet. It was very hard! The next step you stood in the same position and crossed your arms. That was called the help position. The final step was we all had to go in pairs and one person would get in and pretend to drown the other person would take off his top and shorts and would tie them together making a rope. They would then throw the rope and the other person would try to grab it. If they succeed, they would pull the drowning person to the side so they could climb out. Then they swapped over to do the same thing with the other person. It was the end of the lesson and we rushed in the showers and got changed and ready for the journey back.
